Berkeley Lake appeals to water-lovers and the environmentally conscious. The neighborhood is located on an 88-acre lake in Gwinnett County, northeast of Norcross and west of Duluth. Its northern border is on the Chattahoochee River. Incorporated in 1956, the former summer retreat has become a vibrant community of young affluent residents. The neighborhood was named Gwinnett’s 2006 Recycler of the Year. It is also a designated Urban Wildlife Sanctuary and a Tree City USA. The city recently purchased 67 acres of hardwood forest to maintain as green space. City Hall is now housed in an old fishing bait shack, but a new $1 million building is in the works. Homes in Berkeley Lake sell, on average, for slightly less than $400,000, with lakefront homes selling much higher. The per capita income of the 1,700 residents is double the rest of the state. Median household income is $109,401, the highest in the state, and 98 percent of the population has a high school or higher education. Berkeley Lake children attend Gwinnett County schools and their schools all met the state’s Adequate Yearly Progress standards. Berkeley Lake was named a Gwinnett County Elementary School of Excellence and 90 percent of its students met or exceeded testing standards.
