Sandy Springs is a bustling urban area that includes some of the most expensive housing in Atlanta, as well as condos, town homes, apartments and shopping. Several areas are being redeveloped into live-work-play communities. Easy access to MARTA stations, and proximity to Ga. 400 and I-285 make it a centrally located community for working downtown, along the Perimeter or in the northern suburbs. The new city is moving ahead with plans to redevelop Roswell Road, its main thoroughfare, with a mix of housing, office and retail space and to upgrade its streetscape. Once part of unincorporated Fulton County, it became a city late in 2005 when its new charter took effect. The city of 86,000, tucked between Buckhead and Roswell, was developed as a bedroom suburb during the 1950s and '60s.
