Chastain Park in Fulton County (30305)

Chastain Park, named for former Fulton County Commissioner Troy G. Chastain, is located northwest of Buckhead. It borders Sandy Springs. The area’s home prices run from $500,000 to $2 million. The homes sit nestled on tree-lined streets, an oasis from the busy Buckhead area next door. With average the household income at almost $100,000, the area attracts an affluent mix of young professionals and older Atlanta-bred couples. The elementary school districts in the Chastain Park area are excellent and include Sarah Smith and Jackson on the Atlanta side and Heards Ferry on the Sandy Springs side. The neighborhood’s most famous landmark is an Atlanta institution -- the 268-acre park. The largest park in the city, Chastain offers plenty of outdoor activities including trails, golf, an Olympic-sized swimming pool and an equestrian center with a horse park. The stone outdoor amphitheatre holds 6,000 people and hosts concerts in the spring and summer. The area’s beginnings are much more humble. In the early 1900’s, Fulton County acquired the land that is now Chastain Park. In 1909, the county constructed two almshouses on W. Wieuca Road -- one for white people and one for black residents. In the1930s, a Negro Women’s Convict Camp also opened on the property.
