The spine of ultra-elite Buckhead, north of Atlanta's midtown district, is Peachtree Street. Its epicenter is the intersection of Peachtree and Roswell roads. In the 19th century, after a patron shot a male deer and placed its head on a pole, the area became known as Buck's Head. Wildlife is in short supply in the upscale area now, except for the bar scene that's roared in the Buckhead village area in recent years. That's changing as the area is morphing into mixed-use development. It will better mirror its surroundings, known for high-rise condos, high-dollar homes and high-fashion shopping at Phipps and Lenox Square malls. A great deal of Atlanta history took place in this area and organizations such as the Atlanta History Center help keep those memories alive.
