The area now known as Ben Hill grew up in the early 1820s around several churches. Atlanta was not a thriving city, and the closest churches were in Decatur. One of the city's oldest, now Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church on Fairburn Road, was established in 1824 and soon became a center of religious and social life. By the 1970s, Ben Hill had become an established middle-class community. It now maintains a bedroom-community atmosphere within the city limits.
