Neighboring the West End, Adair Park was established in 1892 as a settling place for Atlanta’s growing middle class. Adair Park is located southwest of downtown Atlanta and adjacent to the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks, which define the district on three sides, with Metropolitan Parkway as the fourth. The houses in the area are mainly bungalows with Craftsman-style details. However, in the northernmost area, both folk Victorian and Tudor revival influences can be seen. Over the years, Adair Park has experienced a shift in the make-up of its population to an ethnic mix. There is also a mix of economic classes. The neighborhood ranges from well-kept lawns to tough streets. Police have started foot patrols to help stem the area’s high crime rate. The West End Marta station is within walking distance and city bus service is available. Two parks are located in the neighborhood, which is within 1-1/2 miles to Interstate I-75-85, Ga. 166, and I-20. The West End Mall is nearby – as are the Wren's Nest and the Atlanta University Center. Adair Park schools participate in Project GRAD (Graduation Really Achieves Dreams), a school-community collaborative to help improve instructional quality. Gains have been seen in the past few years but test scores are still low while meeting yearly goals. Parks Middle school is a one-to-one technology school -- every one of its students and teachers have laptops available to take home. The Stewart Avenue United Methodist Church, built in 1921, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The church is an example of the Beaux Arts style. The Gillette Mansion, built from 1892-‘94 is a large architecturally elaborate brick house in the Queen Anne style located in Adair Park.
