Avondale Estates is the only documented Southeastern example of an early 20th century planned community. The older part of the city was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Its many Tudor-style homes and storefronts give the area a quaint feel. A small lake in its interior adds to Avondale's tranquility, making it easy to forget that busy Covington Highway, Memorial Drive and I-285 are nearby. In recent years, more restaurants have moved in, so residents no longer have to leave town in search of culinary variety. The DeKalb Farmer's Market, a virtual United Nations of food, offers treasures of fresh food, but residents still dream of a conventional grocery store.
