When Wal-Mart opened in the mid-1990s at Riverstone Parkway and I-575, the former mill community of Canton got a second wind, with a slew of new shops, restaurants and subdivisions. The town became a hub, and more money was spent there as folks no longer drove as often to Barrett Parkway in Kennesaw for a mix of shopping, dining, movies and recreation. Now subdivisions are rising north past Canton, which hosts numerous festivals and special events, including celebrations for the Fourth of July and Christmas. The four-story Cherokee County Courthouse, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was completed in 1929 from local white marble.
