Ball Ground, in northern Cherokee County, is 50 miles north of downtown Atlanta. While that makes for a long commute to downtown, the area is only 20 minutes from work and play in Alpharetta and just seven minutes to Canton's Riverstone Parkway. I-575 offers access to Lake Allatoona and the North Georgia mountains. Town Center Mall and retail stores in Woodstock, Towne Lake, and the Riverstone area of Canton are all draws for residents. Ball Ground is expected to double its population of about 800 over the next few years as residential growth continues north. Four large housing developments, two smaller ones and a mixed-use project have been or are being built, adding about 800 homes. A new streetscape downtown and a new city hall building are in progress. Two parks, a baseball field and a 6,000-square-foot community building are available for residents. Students attend Cherokee County schools and test above average in standardized tests. The schools are critically overcrowded, but solutions are being discussed. They include busing and double sessions. Like many communities around Atlanta, Ball Ground offers much history. The Battle of Taliwa between the Cherokee and Creek Indians was fought here in 1755. It was incorporated in 1883. Railroads passed through the city, connecting it to the marble quarries in Tate, just north in Pickens County. Ball Ground had a thriving a marble-finishing industry that declined in the 1950s and 1960s. The Hendrix House is a historic 600-square-foot house with a Savannah porch and gardens, built in 1880, which hosts private events.
